HENRY PURCELL
(Westminster, Inglaterra, 1659-Londres, 1695) Compositor inglés. Entró a formar parte del coro de la Capilla Real con apenas ocho años y tuvo por maestros a John Blow y Matthew Locke. En 1677 fue nombrado compositor de los violines del rey, y en 1679 sustituyó a Blow como organista de la abadía de Westminster. Se encargó de la restauración de los instrumentos de la corte, así como de la composición de numerosas obras de carácter religioso, entre las que destacan algunos anthems y oficios como I was glad, in the midst of life (1682), Morning and evening service (1682-1683) o Te Deum and jubilate (1694). De entre sus óperas y sus obras escénicas cabe mencionar la célebre Dido y Eneas (1689), obra clave en los inicios de la música dramática, con importante ascendencia de Jean-Baptiste Lully; destacan también Dioclasian (1690), The Fairy Queen (1692) o La tempestad (1695), en la que adaptó al drama musical la obra homónima de Shakespeare. Dedicó también un buen número de cantatas y odas a diversos monarcas, a quienes sirvió durante toda su vida: Carlos II, Jacobo II y la reina María, para la que escribió algunas de sus composiciones más brillantes, como Why are all the Muses mute (1685), Arise my muse (1690) o Celebrate this festival (1693). Destacables son así mismo las odas que dedicó a santa Cecilia, como Welcome to all the pleasures (1683) o Hail bright Cecilia (1692). Su música instrumental, si bien no tan conocida, asimiló los mismos importantes logros que su música vocal, tal como evidencian sus fantasías y sonatas, escritas todas ellas según una concepción contrapuntística en conjunción con el estilo italiano y el peculiar humor inglés, de lo que resultó una música de personal estilo.
