Thomas Morley
(?, c. 1557-?, c. 1603) Compositor inglés. Se formó con W. Byrd y fue organista de la catedral de San Pablo de Londres y caballero de la capilla Real. Fue también un notable teórico (Sencilla y fácil introducción a la música práctica, 1597) y un influyente editor. Es autor de canciones, de madrigales y de aires para laúd.
Thomas Tallis
(Leicestershire?, actual Reino Unido, h. 1505-Greenwich, id., 1585) Compositor y organista inglés. Poco es lo que se conoce de su vida: la primera referencia que se conserva de él lo sitúa en 1532 como organista de la abadía benedictina de Dover. Desde 1543 fue organista de la capilla real, cargo que conservó bajo los reinados Enrique VIII, Eduardo VI, María Tudor e Isabel I. Asociado al también compositor William Byrd, en 1575 logró un privilegio de la Corona según el cual se le concedió el monopolio de la impresión musical en Inglaterra. Su producción incluye sobre todo música vocal destinada a los oficios divinos, tanto protestantes como católicos. En inglés y latín, respectivamente, veinte anthems y nueve salmos conforman el núcleo del primero, mientras que el segundo, caracterizado por el uso de un elaborado y complejo contrapunto, halla en sus tres misas y cincuenta y dos motetes –uno de ellos, Spem in alium non habui (No he tenido esperanza en lo ajeno), a cuarenta voces– su más lograda expresión. Tallis compuso también cierto número de obras para teclado.
